The Importance of Public Speaking Skills
The importance of public speaking may not be so obvious. How are Public Speaking Skills important? Why do we need them? You may be thinking, “My job doesn’t even entail any public speaking or presentations.”
Your job may not involve any formal public speaking engagements, but we all speak in public everyday. (Unless you are a monk, nun or priest who has taken a vow of silence.)Everyday we interact with people. We talk to our family. Say hello to the neighbours. Speak to the clerk as we pay for our coffee. Converse with our workmates. We communicate with those around us. Communication is the transfer of meaningful information that can be understood. Anything that sends a message is communication. There are many ways to communicate.
Ways to Communicate
- Body Language
- Writing
- Facial expressions
- Sounds
- Touch
- Media
- Posture
- Hand gestures
But the best way to communicate is through Speech. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but if you have a question about the picture you need to use words to explain it. And through communication we can see the importance of public speaking. This is why it is important to learn to present our thoughts and feelings meaningfully. If we are not effective in expressing ourselves then miscommunication can arise. Many issues and misconceptions come from someone misinterpreting what someone else said.

So, what are some of the benefits of Great Public Speaking skills? Well, you’ll be more relaxed when speaking to groups or individuals. You’ll be amazed how your negotiation skills will increase. And whether we like it or not, we are always negotiating. When I put my daughter down for sleep she attempts to either, watch one more show on tv, get something else to eat, or get me to read just one more story. If I decline to give her what she wants she usually says that she’ll go to bed faster if I do. (This coming from a 4 year old.) I think her negotiating skills are better than mine. Whether it’s buying a car or house, discussing building a fence with your neighbour or even getting yourself out of a speeding ticket, the gift of putting your words together in a meaningful way sure helps. And herein lies the importance of public speaking.
